What to do if you’ve lost your UTR number.
Your Unique Taxpayer Reference Number (UTR) is a 10-digit number that is used by HMRC to identify you. You need it in most cases when corresponding with them and to file any tax returns you have due. Without it it’s impossible to file a tax return or pay any tax due so it’s super important!
If you file a tax return personally then you will have a personal UTR number. If you have a limited company, then the company will also have its own UTR number.
You should be able to find your UTR number on any of the following you may receive from HMRC:
- Your Tax Return
- A Welcome to Self-Assessment letter
- Your company important dates document
- A Notice to file a tax return
- Statement of Account
- Payment Reminders
If you still cannot find it here’s what to do!
If you are after your personal UTR:
- Contact HMRC on their helpline 0300 200 3310
They should be able to give you your personal UTR number over the phone once you’ve answered a few security questions.
If you need your company UTR:
- You will need to go to https://www.tax.service.gov.uk/ask-for-copy-of-your-corporation-tax-utr
- You will need to enter your registered company name and company registration number (this can be found on the Companies House website here – https://beta.companieshouse.gov.uk/).
Once you have done this HMRC will send out a copy of your UTR number to the registered office address of the company via post.
